Your patio furniture gets a lot of use during the Spring and Summer months, and will often endure its fair share of wear and tear from being out in the elements. But with the proper care, you can have your patio cushions looking great year after year. So, what is the best way to care for and clean patio cushions? Here are some tips for refreshing your backyard oasis:
- SEASONAL SCRUB: Clean your patio cushions before storing at the end of each season, again before you bring them back out, and any time you notice a new stain. This will keep them looking new and mildew free.
- LOOK AT THE LABEL – Different materials call for different methods of cleaning – make sure you know what they are before attempting to clean anything on your own. Some cushions have removable covers that can simply be thrown into the washer.
- CUSHION CLEANING – Find a clean surface and gently vacuum away any debris, dust or dirt. Mix one (2) tablespoons of dish detergent with ½ cup of Borax in a bucket of water. Dip your brush in the solution and scrub the surface of your patio cushions. Let sit for a few minutes, then rinse off using a garden hose. Squeeze out excess water and blot with a towel to soak up moisture before propping cushions vertically to air-dry.
- STAIN SITUATIONS: If you have stubborn stains on your patio cushions, you may need to pull out some secret weapons:
- Mold or Mildew: Scrub as much of the mold or mildew as you can before spraying the area with distilled white vinegar. Wait 10 minutes, then scrub your cushion with a brush followed by a sponge dipped in water and a bit of detergent. Rinse and air-dry.
- Sunscreen, Bug Spray or Food Stains: Sprinkle baking soda onto your patio cushion, wait 15 minutes so the oil can be absorbed, then scrape off the powder. Repeat if necessary.
- Grass Stains: Use a soft brush to scrub a liquid detergent that has stain-removing enzymes into the stain. Rinse with clean water and allow to air dry.
